  • 3 Walsh, Raoul

    1887-1980
       Nacido en Nueva York el 11 de marzo de 1887, los primeros anos de la vida de Raoul Walsh son oscuros. Lo encontramos ya, sin duda, en 1907 como actor de la version teatral de “The Clansman”, novela de Thomas Dixon que inspirarara a David W. Griffith su celebre pelicula El nacimiento de una nacion (The Birth of a Nation, 1915). Despues de la correspondiente gira, de vuelta ya en su ciudad natal, continua con su carrera de actor que, entre otros logros, lo lleva a interpretar, a las ordenes de Griffith, el papel de John Wilkes Booth, asesino del presidente Lincoln, en El nacimiento de una nacion. Ya antes, en 1914, habia empezado a dirigir bajo la supervision del propio Griffith.
       Su primer largometraje, co-realizado por Christy Cabanne, es Life of Villa (1915), pero sus dos peliculas mudas mas famosas son, sin discusion, The Thief of Bagdad (El ladron de Bagdad, 1924), deslumbrante espectaculo visual ro dado para la productora de su protagonista, Douglas Fairbanks, y La fragil voluntad (Sadie Thompson, 1928), melodrama a la medida de su protagonista, Gloria Swanson, que produjo el filme. Hasta entonces, albores ya del sonoro, Walsh no habia prestado una atencion especial al western. Lo hizo de inmediato, como muestran sus primeros filmes sonoros del genero, En el viejo Ari zona (In Old Arizona, 1929), que fue el primero de una larga lista con el Cisco Kid como protagonista, y La gran jornada (The Big Trail, 1930), de larga duracion y largo presupuesto. Precisamente durante el rodaje de la primera de las dos peliculas citadas perdio un ojo en un accidente, por lo que tuvo que ser sustituido por Warner Baxter como protagonista de la pelicula, y auxiliado por Irving Cummings en la direccion. En la Fox entre 1929 y 1935, en la Paramount hasta 1939 y en lo sucesivo en Warner Bros, Raoul Walsh ira consolidando su categoria como realizador hasta 1964, ano de estreno de su ultima pelicula, precisamente un western, hermoso y testimonial.
       Aunque sus habilidades como creador cinematografico tienen mas largo alcance que el que se limita al western, dejemos constancia de que, con toda probabilidad, es en este genero donde consigue sus mejores obras, sencillas, serenas, con un importante sentido de la narracion en imagenes. Como caso curioso, hay que indicar que Walsh hizo un remake de dos de sus peliculas, El ultimo refugio (High Sierra, 1941), dura historia de gangsters inscrita de lleno en el genero negro que convirtio en una estrella a Humphrey Bogart, y Objetivo Birmania (Objective Burma!, 1945), filme belico. Ambos remakes los realizo en clave de western: Juntos hasta la muerte (Colorado Territory, 1949) y Tam bores lejanos (Distant Drums, 1951), respectivamente. Algo indica este detalle sobre su “aficion” al genero. Al final de su carrera construyo algunos de sus mejores westerns, y tambien alguno que otro en tono de parodia, como Un rey para cuatro reinas (The King and Four Queens, 1956) y La rubia y el sheriff (The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw, 1959).

    1886-1962
       Michael Curtiz siempre sera el director de Casablanca, pero es mucho mas que eso. Es un director que asociamos a Warner Bros, que se atrevio con todo y que raramente defraudo, ni en peliculas musicales ni en filmes de aventuras ni en melodramas romanticos ni en largometrajes de accion. Tampoco, desde luego, en sus westerns, un punado de selectas realizaciones por las que parece no pasar el tiempo. Este hungaro perspicaz y concienzudo fue, con toda seguridad, el director, junto a Raoul Walsh, que mejor partido supo sacar del discutible actor Errol Flynn. Con el como protagonista, realiza su famosa trilogia, impropiamente llamada “de las ciudades”, compuesta por Dodge, ciudad sin ley, Oro, amor y sangre y Camino de Santa Fe, pero tal vez el mejor de sus westerns es el itinerante Los comancheros, que sera tambien su ultima pelicula, realizada poco antes de morir. Nacido en Budapest como Kertesz Mihaly, trabajo en su pais, alternando tareas directoriales con las de actor, entre 1912 y 1918. A partir de esa fecha, que coincide con el final de la industria cinematografica hungara, dirige en Austria y otros paises de Europa occidental hasta que Jack Warner, impresionado por alguna de las peliculas que habia visto de Curtiz, lo lleva a los Estados Unidos donde, pasado el tiempo, se convertiria en el director mas emblematico de Warner Bros, para quien realizo pelicula tras pelicula sin descanso hasta llegar al centenar. Lo sorprendente es que rara vez el producto que salia de sus manos era una mediocridad y con frecuencia resultaba notable, independientemente del genero o la clave narrativa que utilizara.

    1912-1991
       Nacido en Chicago y graduado en el Jesus College, Cambridge, encuentra trabajo en la biblioteca del film de Warner Bros, donde se inicia en tareas de montaje. Como director, empieza en 1946 con peliculas de presupuesto bajo, que fue capaz de trascender. En 1949 deja Warner Bros despues de ca torce anos de relacion con la productora y se establece como director independiente, lo que tiene la ventaja de poder abordar proyectos mas personales, y la desventaja de la inestabilidad profesional. Pocos realizadores poseen la habilidad que tiene Don Siegel para narrar en imagenes. Ausente de retorica, el aspecto visual de sus filmes es de una precision y sencillez dificiles de igualar, incluso en sus filmes menos afortunados. En una filmografia riquisima, llena de aciertos, destacan, a mi juicio, dos peliculas bien alejadas en el tiempo; por una parte, la mitica La invasion de los ladrones de cuerpos (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1956), no estrenada comercialmente en Espana en su momento, pero bien conocida a traves de la pequena pantalla, perteneciente al genero fantastico, cuyo “mensaje” progresista esta muy lejos de la habitual soflama. La segunda, un filme atipico que podria no ser considerado como un western, pero que en decision personal he decidido incluir aqui, aunque solo sea por su localizacion temporal, la de la Guerra de Secesion norteamericana, es El seductor (The Beguiled, 1971), introspectiva y cruel como pocas peliculas pueden llegar a serlo. Con mas motivo aun, puede resultar extrano considerar que La jungla humana sea un western. En este caso, me he dejado convencer, un poco a mi pesar, por razones de “atmosfera” narrativa, pese a que la historia se desarrolla en Nueva York, en epoca actual y en el ambiente del departamento de policia.

    1907-1993
       La tan manida palabreja “artesano” se invento, sin duda, para definir a Gordon Douglas, un magnifico profesional, capaz de lo mejor y que no conocia la palabra “peor”. Una riquisima filmografia ilustra cualquier comentario elogioso que se quiera hacer acerca de este director, que realizo un punado de westerns, algunos de los cuales son, sencillamente, so berbios. Bastara con citar tres: Solo el valiente, un intenso drama claustrofobico, la enigmatica Embos cada y la itinerante Rio Conchos, modelo de virtudes cinematograficas. Neoyorquino, fue primero ac tor infantil, despues actor joven, mas tarde creador de gags para Hal Roach y, por fin, realizador. RKO, Columbia y, sobre todo, Warner Bros consumieron lo esencial de su labor como director. Fue para la ultima para la que realizo sus mejores peliculas, y tambien sus mejores westerns. Probablemente la obra maestra de Douglas sea su filme fantastico La humanidad en peligro (Them!, 1954), producto modesto pero de una intensidad casi nunca alcanzada en el cine de ciencia-ficcion. Hay que decir, con pena, que fracaso en el innecesario remake de Stagecoach, que rodo en 1966, y que en Espana llevo el titulo Hacia los grandes horizontes.

    Самая молодая из трех [ Big Three] крупнейших вещательных корпораций [network]. Создана в 1943 на базе радиовещательной компании "Блу нетуорк" [ Blue Network], отделения Эн-би-си [ NBC]. Свою телесеть создала позже, чем два других лидера ТВ - в 1948. В 1953 в состав корпорации вошла также "Юнайтед парамаунт тиатерз" [United Paramount Theaters]. В 1953 подписала контракт со студией У. Диснея [ Disney, Walt (Walter Elias)], а в 1955 - с "Уорнер бразерс" [ Warner Bros.], что позволило ей выпустить на экраны ТВ множество популярных сериалов [ serial] и других программ. Однако до 1976 "Эй-би-си" не удавалось приблизиться к двум лидерам "тройки". Впервые ее программа - сериал "Счастливые денечки" ["Happy Days"] - вышла на первое место в 1976. Компания поспешила развить этот успех, создав ряд развлекательных телесериалов: "Лаверн и Ширли" ["Laverne and Shirley"], "Третий - не лишний" ["Three's Company"], "Остров Фантазии" ["Fantasy Island"], "Корабль любви" ["Love Boat"], "Ангелы Чарли" [ Charlie's Angels], "Человек ценой в 6 млн" ["The Six Million Dollar Man"] и др. Период 1975-80 в истории ТВ получил название "эры фантазий Эй-би-си". К 1980 интерес к суперлегкому жанру упал, и Эй-би-си уступила первенство Си-би-эс [ CBS]. К числу успехов Эй-би-си относят также программу "Найтлайн" ["Nightline"] и трансляции Олимпийских игр. Первой в США прибегла к финансированию программ с помощью рекламы [ commercial]. В состав компании входят телесеть, 5 телестанций, компания "Эй-би-си рэйдио" [ABC Radio], около 300 кинотеатров, компания видеозвукозаписи, киностудия и издательство. Бланка говорят все персонажи мультфильмов студии: кролик Багс Банни [ Bugs Bunny], утенок Даффи Дак [ Daffy Duck], поросенок Порки Пиг [Porky Pig]. На надгробном камне на могиле артиста высечены слова, которыми заканчивались все фильмы про утенка Даффи - "Вот и все, друзья" ["That's all, Folks"]
